First grade is fantastic! We enjoy having desks of our very own for books and supplies. We study new word families each week along with high frequency words to become independent readers. By the end of the year, we can write our own stories. In first grade we study various math topics: counting, addition, subtraction, money, telling time, fractions, patterns, shapes, calendar, and graphs. Just like in reading where we practice reading sight words quickly, we work on math addition and subtraction facts and committing these to memory! Students who recognize sight words instantly are better readers; students who master math facts are better mathematicians! First graders receive online grade reports through Sycamore for the subjects of Math, Phonics, Reading, and Spelling. On report cards, a letter grade (ABCDF) will be given in Math, Phonics, Reading, and Spelling. This grading scale can be found in the handbook. In all other classes, first graders will receive either Satisfactory or Needs Improvement for their grade.
