Home of the Cougars!

St. Philip School was erected in 1851.  It began as a one-room log building and had one lay teacher, Mr. George Schenk.  In 1870, a brick school was built and eighty-five students were enrolled in the new school.  By 1892 the enrollment had increased to 102 pupils and St. Philips received their first three Benedictine nuns.  In 1904 the old structure of the present school was built and originally had two classrooms downstairs and the upstairs being an auditorium.  In 1949, the enrollment continued to increase which lead to the upstairs auditorium to be converted into two classrooms.  In 1956 an addition was added at the rear of the school which included modern heating and restroom facilities.  In 1959 a fifth classroom was added by dividing the classroom on the downstairs south side.  This made necessary the hiring of the first lay teachers since 1892.

With the continuing increase in student body, the only answer was to build a new addition onto the existing structure.  This addition was built and classes began in January, 1962.  Included in this new addition were the cafeteria, a future library, office space, and additional restrooms.  As student numbers continued to rise, the decision was made to organize a school board in May, 1964.  The last school remodeling was completed in the fall of 1976, which consisted of 8 individual classrooms.  Grades 1 thru 4 were self-contained and grades 5 thru 8 were departmentalized and included Religion, English, Science, and Social Studies.

We just finished remodeling our school again this past summer and the school looks amazing.  We now have 13 classrooms, a central office and the principal's office, a Resource room, a new and improved Computer Lab, as well as a cafeteria/gym.  The school has come a long way since 1851 and our student enrollment numbers have almost tripled.  We begin school at 7:20 and end at 3:05.  Masses are held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday for the student body.  Our subjects include: Grades 1 thru 4 are self-contained, grades 5 thru 8 are departmentalized (Social Studies, Math, English, Art, Music, Health/P.E., Computers, and Religion), a full-time resource teacher, and three classroom aides.
